Vocab Express, the online vocabulary learning application has signed an agreement with Cornwall Learning to offer its new Inspire Curriculum for primary languages. Responding to recent changes in the primary curriculum, which states all maintained primary schools across England have to teach a modern or ancient foreign language to children aged 7–11, this aims to equip educators, especially those with limited language expertise, with the right resources to effectively teach languages at primary level.
Piloted during 2013, the Inspire Curriculum is a new, best practice solution for schools and academies which links to the wider world of work, life skills and learning outside the classroom. It provides schools with a low cost, trialled, fully thematic, worked example of the National Curriculum, mapped to every programme of study for all subjects. With 144 detailed language lesson plans and PowerPoint presentations, supporting flashcards, activity printouts and authentic sound files for all Key Stage 2 units, the Inspire languages package offers an exciting introduction to primary language teaching, enabling pupils to use languages in a wide range of creative contexts.
Through Inspire, pupils will be able to explore the patterns and sounds of language through songs, rhymes and stories, engage in conversations in the target language, ask and answer questions, express opinions and respond to those of others using the correct pronunciation and intonation. The languages package is also extensively linked with the literacy curriculum; pupils will learn how to read carefully and show an understanding of words and their origins, write simple sentences and phrases from memory, and adapt these to create new sentences to clearly express their ideas.
All primary schools that purchase the Inspire Curriculum package through Cornwall Learning will also receive access to the respective Vocab Express courses for all of their students. Developed in close partnership with MFL teachers, integrating text, images and audio, Vocab Express provides an engaging environment in which students can build their vocabulary while teachers track and monitor their progress.
Sally Griffin, programme director for the Inspire Curriculum at Cornwall Learning comments: “Cornwall Learning welcomed the opportunity to work with Vocab Express to support educators in delivering the primary languages curriculum. Vocab Express clearly understands what schools want and need to make language learning as stimulating, straightforward and successful as possible. We hope this partnership and our combined resources help inspire many young linguists across the country!”
Justin Sycamore, managing director at Vocab Express comments: “Having established ourselves as a leading vocabulary learning tool for secondary and A-level languages, we’re incredibly excited to be expanding into the primary market. The Inspire Curriculum primary languages package is the perfect resource to kick-start young people’s interests in languages early on. It is also a fantastic resource in terms of smoothing the transition to Key Stage 3, breaking down preconceived ideas about languages being too difficult to master.”
