Vocab Express shortlisted for ‘Innovation in ICT’ in the 2014 Bett Awards

Vocab Express, the online vocabulary learning application for secondary schools and colleges is proud to announce it has been shortlisted for the ‘Innovation in ICT’ award for its assignments module in the 2014 Bett Awards.

The annual awards aim to reward, highlight and promote outstanding achievements and the inspiring creativity and innovation of organisations in the technology in education sector. Forming a fundamental part of Bett, the world’s leading event for learning technology, the winners are viewed as examples of excellence in ICT provision and support for nurseries, schools, colleges and special schools.

One of 10 finalists in the category, Vocab Express provides an innovative and interactive method for engaging young people in foreign languages, as well as the sciences and humanities. The Vocab Express assignment module, the design of which has been driven by teacher feedback, allows specific vocabulary exercises to be set as homework, with student progress tracked by the teacher and attainment levels differentiated using various metrics. Students are motivated through a points and scoreboard system and all activity is tracked in real-time. Teachers are able to set and monitor students’ homework by viewing a breakdown of key information, including how long the assignment took, how many questions were answered correctly, and how many wrongly, helping them to identify where students are struggling and excelling, so that teaching material can be adjusted where and when appropriate.

Justin Sycamore, managing director, Vocab Express comments: “We are thrilled to have been shortlisted for the Bett 2014 ‘Innovation in ICT’ award in what has come to be considered the most prestigious ICT awards in the UK education sector. As technology continues to evolve and change the way in which students learn and teachers teach, our assignments module has been a key step for us in assisting this transformation. We are proud that as a finalist, this innovation in vocabulary learning has been recognised and we thank all of the teachers – and students – who have provided valuable feedback and insight to classroom issues over the years to enable us to achieve this.”

The winners of the 16th annual Bett Awards will be announced from the shortlist at the Awards Dinner at The Brewery, London on Wednesday 22 January 2014, the first evening of Bett 2014.
