Creating a buzz around Languages

Vocab Express launch the European Day of Languages Championship

Vocab Express, the online modern foreign languages (MFL) vocabulary learning application, has announced the launch of a week long language championship for schools which will coincide with the European Day of Languages (EDL).

The Championship, which will run from 26th September until 9th October, is designed to engage and encourage young people in learning another language.

The European Day of Languages is held annually on 26 September to show people across Europe the importance of languages, and the enjoyment that can be found in learning them. To support this important message, Vocab Express has introduced the EDL Championship as a fun way to celebrate a variety of languages; French, German, Spanish, Italian, Latin and further afield, Mandarin.

Students from schools subscribed to Vocab Express will be able to log on and test their knowledge of vocabulary, scoring points for their individual scoreboard and school league table. Schools will compete against other schools across the UK for the top position, with real-time leader-boards tracking action as it happens.

Top awards to be won include the Genius Cup and Challenge Cup, to reflect the achievements of the top 25 students, and overall student body from a school. Top scoring individual students from all participating schools will also be in with the chance to be awarded one of over 340 certificates for their achievements within the championship, and for achievements within their school.

Justin Sycamore, managing director, Vocab Express comments: “The EDL Championships offers an exciting opportunity for students around the UK to gather and demonstrate their knowledge of foreign languages whilst continuing their learning process. This fits with the Vocab Express mission to engage students, keep them actively learning and raise attainment levels. By making the foundations of learning another language – the vocabulary - more accessible, exciting and easier to pick up, we hope that future generations will learn to love languages and fully explore the doors that speaking another tongue can open for work and for pleasure.”

Free entry to the EDL Championship is open to all schools currently subscribing to Vocab Express or considering a subscription for the 2011-12 academic year.
