Love languages? Celebrate them with the European Day of Languages Championship 2012
The second annual European Day of Languages Championship has now been announced by Vocab Express, the online foreign language vocabulary learning application. Running from the European Day of Languages (EDL) on 26 September until 2 October 2012, the Championship will challenge students from schools around the UK to showcase their knowledge of foreign languages.
The annual EDL is held to celebrate the importance of languages for people across Europe. In support of this, the EDL Championship is designed as an enjoyable way to engage young people in languages including French, German, Spanish, Italian, Latin, and further afield, Mandarin and Urdu.
Participating schools and students will test their knowledge of foreign language vocabulary on Vocab Express, competing to score points for a position on an individual leader-board, and to contribute to their school’s overall rank. Schools will then compete against others from across the UK for the coveted top position, with real-time leader-boards tracking action as it happens.
A tiered series of awards are available to the winning schools, celebrating success in both the overall Championship, and each separate language. Genius Cups and Challenge Cups will reflect the achievements of the top 25 students, and overall student body from a school respectively. The leading individual students at the close of the Championship will also be recognised for their achievements, with certificates awarded for their achievements within the Championship, or within their school.
Entry to the EDL Championship is free, and open to all schools currently subscribing to Vocab Express. Schools who do not currently subscribe have the chance to take up one of 100 free places in the Championship, allowing their students to compete for the duration. For these schools, access to the resources will be available in the week prior to the EDL so students have time to practice and prepare.
Justin Sycamore, managing director, Vocab Express comments: “After the success of the first European Day of Languages Championship, we are excited to see demonstrated again for 2012 the talent, passion for, and knowledge of foreign languages that young people have. The opportunity for them to get together and challenge each other while continuing to learn and develop in a fun way is something that here at Vocab Express we are keen to support. We want to engage students in a way that they find interesting, to keep them actively learning and to raise attainment. I would like to wish the best of luck to each school and student that will be taking part!”
